93 Ranger starting system

Approx. 6 months ago, got a no start condition. Jumping the remote solenoid worked dandy. Did all the usual checks, nothing loose, burnt, blown, or disconnected.
Replaced remote solenoid, no change. Batt at 12.8 v., etc.
(Not my truck, is son in laws. He dealt with it by jumping solenoid, this lasted a couple of weeks, then it started starting with the key. for the next few months, started fine. had one episode of no start, for about a week, kid dealt with it by jumping solenoid.)
This has now been several months, with 90 percent of the time it starts normally. Now I have it and am trying to find the fault and repair.
Today I tested batt, 12.8 v. Redid / freshened up batt connections, check starter connections. dry and tight. solenoid connections, dry and tight.
first I took clutch switch out of circuit, jumped it, pink wire to red / blue stripe. Started with key. Thought I had found issue. Not.
After a couple of key starts, went back to no start condition.
took transmission neutral switch out of circuit, jumped it (only two wires.) Started with key. After a couple of starts with key, went back to no start condition. (Remote solenoid does not click at all, never has.)
Replaced key cylinder. Started with key. After several starts with key, went back to no start condition.
Replaced clutch slave cylinder at beginning of this episode, although I am fairly certain it exhibited no start condition prior to slave replacement. At any rate, observed starter and flywheel in slave process, no missing teeth, bad alignment, etc.
Since it starts a, with key at times, and b, by jumping remote solenoid, how would it be that a bad connection, ground(unless loose, creating make or break condition)or bad component could exist?
and what should the remaining process be to resolution?
Thanks in advance for any help, greatly appreciated.
